The biggest British singing sensation in a generation and the official face of Shunburn, Leona Lewis, reveals her secrets to staying safe while enjoying the summer sun.
Are you a big sun lover?
I do like the sun a lot. I used to love it even more but I’m much more wary of it since I got badly burnt a few years ago. It was very painful and very embarrassing. In all the photos everyone’s brown and I’m the bright red one in the middle. Because I’m mixed race I thought I wouldn’t get burnt. But it just goes to prove anyone can get burnt. I never got sunburnt till I was in my teens. I guess that was because my parents used to lather me up with sun cream when I was a kid, but you forget when you’ve got to do it yourself.
Is that why you are supporting Shunburn and encouraging people to sign up for the free texts reminding people to take care on the hottest days of the year?
Exactly. The Shunburn campaign is about preventing more teenagers from getting skin cancer caused by sunburn so I think it’s really important to get that awareness up, especially in the summer. You don’t really think about getting sunburnt when you’re in Britain - I know I don’t think about the sun sometimes when I’m at home in London. Of course it’s really important to remember your suncream when you’re going on holiday but you still need to put on the high factor and protect yourself in your day-to-day life in the UK too, you can just as easily get sunburnt here when the sun is out.
Have you ever used a sun bed?
No. I don’t think it’s too healthy so I’d rather get a fake tan or something.
What are your other beach essentials?
I always have a sarong and a t-shirt. Sunglasses definitely, the sun is so bright at times, and a hat. It’s funny though, being part of this campaign has already made me more aware of the sun. I’ve been spending a lot of time in L.A recently and it is just so sunny and sometimes you don’t even realise how intense it is but I’ve been putting the SPF 30 on and keeping covered up - so practicing what I preach!/quote]
